Arcadia,USA
The City of Arcadia is a jewel among Southland communities
encompassing approximately 11 square miles of land in the
westerly end of the San Gabriel Valley at the base of the an
Gabriel Mountains. Located approximately 18 miles
northeast of downtown Los Angeles, Arcadia is known as the
"Community of Homes". It is a picturesque,
affluent, largely built out, and primarily residential
community. In addition to its residential sector, the Los
Angeles County Arboretum, Santa Anita Fashion Park, Santa Anita
Race Track, Arcadia County Park, and the Santa Anita Golf Course
annually attract a substantial number of visitors into Arcadia
from other communities. Arcadia is also home to
several quality hotels, such as the Hilton, Marriott, Embassy
Suites and Residence Inn.
Arcadia lies within a "Sixty Mile Circle" centered
on Los Angeles, a dynamic concentration of population,
employment, business, industry and finance. Two-thirds of
the State's 100 largest corporations are headquartered within
the circle. Additionally, several federal and state
highways, four rail lines, and three international airports, as
well as the 210 Freeway passing through Arcadia, provide ready
access to regional, national and international markets.
Broken
hill,Australia
The City of Broken Hill is the largest regional centre in the
western half of New South Wales. It lies in the centre of the
sparsely settled New South Wales Outback, close to the South
Australian border and midway between the Queensland and
Victorian borders. The most recent estimates placed the
population at 20,983.
The nearest large population centre is Milder in Victoria,
three hundred kilometers distant to the south on the Murray
River. The nearest large city is Adelaide, capital of South
Australia, approximately 500 kilometers to the southwest.
Because of its location Broken Hill has strong cultural and
historical connections with South Australia and operates on
Central Australian Time, one half hour behind Eastern Standard
Time.
Broken Hill is world famous for its silver, lead and zinc mines
that have been worked for over a century. Only one of the many
mines is still operating, the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine.
However, this mine is expected to cease operations around 2006.
In expectation of this major change in its economy, Broken Hill
has successfully developed a thriving tourism industry based on
the attractions of the City and surrounding Outback areas.
